Here’s a first look at a possible cover for my next book, Grandview Film: Cinematic Crossings with Joseph Sunn Jue — the final part of my trilogy on Chinese American artists in film and performance. In 1933, Joseph Sunn Jue founded the Grandview Film Company right in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Frustrated by Hollywood’s yellowface and erasure, he built his own studio — producing over 25 films about Chinese and Chinese Americans — and also became a major figure in Hong Kong cinema. This mid-1940s photo was taken on Stockton Street in San Francisco between Clay and Sacramento. Like my earlier books Hollywood Chinese and Forbidden City, USA, Grandview Film will be a visual historiography featuring hundreds of rare images and stories. Still lots more work ahead — but you can follow along on Facebook and Instagram for updates.
