Madama Butterfly: Boston Lyric Opera

Sept 14 – 24, 2023  |   ArtsEmerson’s Exhibit Space  |  118 Boylston Street  |  Boston MA 02116

Curated in partnership with the Boston Lyric Opera and filmmaker Arthur Dong, the “History Comes to Life in Madama Butterfly” exhibit explored BLO’s new production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. BLO’s Butterfly was the culmination of The Butterfly Process, a 3-year exploration centering authentic storytelling with new approaches to canonical operas. The innovative production, under the guidance of director Phil Chan, found its inspiration from historical places and events of that era — from San Francisco’s storied nightclub Forbidden City to the mass incarceration of thousands of American citizens following the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Hosted by ArtsEmerson, this exhibit featured a combination of film and visual displays, aimed to complement both the experience of those who attended performances and those who were interested in learning more about BLO’s work and partnerships surrounding this production.

Co-curated by Sara O’Brien, BLO Senior Director of Public Engagement, and Arthur Dong, who also served as Historical Dramaturg for the production.
