November 13, 2022: Visual effects artist Ellen Poon and make-up artist Tym Buacharern join filmmaker/guest programmer Arthur Dong in a spirited conversation about the controversial practice of yellowface and the erasure of Chinese American creators from film history. The discussion was a program of the “Hollywood Chinese: The First 100 Years” series, presented at the Academy Museum, and preceded a screening of 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, which included Oscar@ nominated special visual effects by animator/sculptor Wah Ming Chang, and yellowface makeup by William Tuttle, who received an honorary Oscar® for his work on the film.
